Science has known since the mid 1930's that alcoholism and addiction to many other abusable substances had a strong physical component. That is, when a person began to abuse alcohol or a drug, something changed in his or her brain chemistry. This change caused the person to be compelled to continue the abuse. Later it was proven that many people were born with this brain chemistry.

It was learned further, that the compulsion was caused by an inefficiency in the brain's manufacturing cells to "manufacture" needed brain chemicals. A Person with this problem often learns to substitute an abusable substance for the missing brain chemicals when, in fact, all that was needed was more "raw materials."
